Puddles of Bravery

The last few days have been a mad house of sorts as I have scoured the North Carolina High Point Market, a wholesale market for all things decor. With my husband in tote, his first visit to such an extravaganza, we embarked on a five day scavenger hunt. Just a seven hour jaunt from our home in Nashville, we hurried away in search of great finds for my clients and their homes.

Somewhat overwhelmed by the process, my husband couldn’t believe the extraordinary finds to be found. Within just hours of arrival, we were finding amazing things. Pieces with rich history and stories of old. Antiques, new creations out of old, and people who had a passion to create such things. There’s just something beautiful about design in general, but when you start to incorporate the wonders of history, meaning, and uniqueness it becomes just a bit more magical.

One of the vendors, a couple, had a booth full of rich french antiques and finds. These pieces were unbelievably gorgeous and older than our nation, which was simply hard to imagine.   What started merely as a desire for beauty, catapulted them to travel, and to later step out in faith to chase a dream.

Do you have a dream? Is there something God has instilled within you that maybe seems far-fetched or a bit out of your league?

I think there are so many of us that have these dreams and desires. Sometimes God just nudges us to step out and chase that dream. I did. I am. I continue to do so. Knowing you were created for something more is usually where it starts. I knew I loved business and design long before I ever started school. Pretty things mattered to me. I was visual. What about you? Look back at your youth. What did you do, love doing, or dream of?

As women, we sometimes hurry about suppressing those God-given dreams and desires for the normal rat race and expectations of the now; being a mom, being a wife, or a career woman. You were created for something more. I was created for something more. I am chasing that and I am seeking that. I now do interior design full-time helping create beautiful spaces for people, but that hasn’t always been the case. In fact I recall a period of time when I was longing for more and feeling trapped. But God. He has His way of challenging us to take the first move, to see if we are wise and trusting of Him.

Market bliss has its way of always challenging me for what lies ahead. I want to live a life that is never settling and always seeking God’s best. I guess it’s like my search for just the right pieces, I’m wanting to seek out God’s purposes for my life no matter where it takes me. Even if it takes me six blocks in the rain wearing jeweled flip-flops carrying wooden treasures in one hand while my husband carries a ladder and a piece of bark in one hand, while holding an umbrella in the other hand over my head. We may’ve looked like a circus act trapeze-ing puddles while juggling. What a crazy effort I went through to get those “just right” pieces to my car to take home. It appeared to be absurd I’m sure.

Don’t be afraid. Don’t let the puddles, the obstacles, or the laughter of someone passing by keep you from your purpose. As a designer, it’s hard not to be worried about what your clients or other designers might think of your work. I need to always step forward doing what I know is best, using the talents I have, while leaving the rest to God. So again I ask you, what are you chasing? What is it you’re called to do? Are you willing to walk some blocks in not so perfect circumstances to obtain the purpose?

I think you know it’ll be just fine. Just like my husband escorted me with an umbrella over my head, God walks beside you even through the puddles until you make it there. Be courageous my friend, a little water won’t hurt you.
