Have you ever felt insignificant, unqualified, inadequate - not enough?
It’s easy to look around me on Main Street, across the street, at the coffee shop, at church, almost anywhere I go and see a sea of amazing gifted people. It hasn't come easy for me, but the last several years I have discovered that the more secure I am in my identity in Christ and faith in Him to carry out His purposes for my life, I can genuinely celebrate His purposes for others and cheer them on instead of defaulting to feelings of not enough.
There are so many things that can contribute to making us feel inadequate or not enough - comparison, age (too old - too young), our past, our own ideas of what life should look like, our failures. Human nature and culture tempts us to focus on what someone else has, what someone else is doing, what someone else's journey is. But that's not what God intended for us.
He calls us to rise up and walk in who He says we are.
Romans 8:15-17 (The Msg) says this, "This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!"
I love how these verses describe the resurrection life as "adventurously expectant". We have to be secure in knowing our identity in Christ to embrace His plan for our lives. This will bring true and lasting contentment in the purposes for which He created us. When we don't live in the fullness of our identity, we can't live in the fullness of our purpose.
How do we do this?
Staying close to God's heart through prayer and lingering in His word to discovering His truths are key. His Word disseminates darkness and clarifies confusion. There is always more of God to be found and more of ourselves to let go of.
Is there any area you're feeling inadequate today? God wants to replace that feeling with the truth of who He is and who you are in Him. He is able, true, patient, good, kind, sovereign, gracious, merciful, forgiving. He loves you and is so for you.
